The Phillips Daytona Ultimatum Watch auction ended on the 12th May 2018. Not surprisingly Daytona’s went under the hammer for some serious money. The Daytona seems to be vintage classic that shows no slowing down the vintage watch of vintage. All the Daytona’s sold for either between the estimate guide or over suggested higher figure by the auction house. The most expensive was a rare white gold 18k Daytona Ref 6265 “The Unicorn” with black dial and bark finished bracelet. The bracelet is very unusual not like the standard oyster bracelet most Daytona’s have. To press most expensive ever was Paul Newmans Daytona the one he actually wore. The pictures below are courtesy of Phillips auction house.
The “Unicorn” sold for 5,937,500 CHF which about £450,000 Pounds crazy money, not sure I like the bracelet but its rare piece for the true collector and seems no shortage of collectors. The cheapest one I say cheap but it still sold for CHF 106,250 and works out at £79,750 pounds so not really cheap at short of £80,000 pounds on a leather strap, much prefer the bracelet to the leather strap always been a bracelet guy.

On Friday Phillips Auctioneers auctioned off for sale, The most iconic watch in the world Paul Newman Daytona’s, this watch was given to his daughters ex partner in the 1980’s which he wore for years. The watch was given to Paul by his wife and at the time she requested that particular dial which is referred to as the “exotic dial” what a stunning looking piece with great provenance. But vintage watch lovers owes a lot to Paul Newman especially the Daytona watch!
The watch started off at $1,000,000 and the second bid was $10,000,000 and kept climbing to staggering $15,500,000 with auction fees $17,750,000 making this the most expensive watch ever sold which was no surprise at all. You can see the high lights in the video below:
Christie’s Rare Watches and American Icons Auction 21st June brought in over 10,000,000 dollars when the hammer fell, the auction was held in New York, at Rockefeller Center with 250 timepieces on the day not bad for a days work. The watch theme for the auction was based on watches from American icons such as President Lyndon B, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and so on.
They was a couple of nice Paul Newman Daytona’s that always fetch good money but after the news of Paul Newman’s own personal watch coming up for sale soon by Philips Auctioneers and being the first auction after the news it failed to drive the Daytona’s prices up much. This may change after the ultimate Daytona goes for sale later this year 26th October.
Fifth : Heuer Autavia ref. 3646 with Indianapolis Motor Speedway Logo Dial = $199,500
The buyer of the Cartier Tank was no other than Kim kardashian West that paid the whopping $379,500 the most expensive Cartier more than likely. Vintage watches do not seem to be cooling off any time soon. You can check out some of the up and coming auctions with Christie’s
Here is a interesting watch the Rolex Daytona 6263 after the recent post of mine regarding Paul Newman Daytona 6239 found and is going up for auction later on this year by Christie’s auction house. This particular watch the 6239 was given to his daughter’s boy friend in the 1980’s which was a iconic watch in itself worn and loved by the main man. I recently read a article that shed light on the Daytona Paul wore after the 6239 this the Rolex Daytona 6263 with engraving on the caseback drive slowly Joanne. This one was also given to Paul by his wife.
Paul had a long history with racing driving one of his true passions there is a picture below with Paul on the podium after a race. As you can see in the picture the Daytona was being used in the races as probably one of the reasons Paul loved the Daytona so much. The tachymeter measures miles per hour over a distance of a mile most chronographs have this feature but the Daytona was the watch to have on the track.
Paul Newman played a big part in vintage watches probably was one of the biggest factors the Daytona become so successful also with the watches being so beautiful helped. The Vintage Daytona will always be the watch to buy now and in 50 years but prices seem to be soaring every day all the big collectors want a vintage Daytona. Christie’s Auctioneers have plenty vintage watch auctions some of the rarest of the rare.
Christie’s Auction recently on the 15th June another Paul Newman Daytona 6241 went for Half a Million dollars when the hammer fell. The Newman phenomenon is still strong for collectors, going crazy for the these Daytona’s, sale price was $560,803 but their estimate was very conservative at $199,073 to $398,145 but smashed that figure. The watch is 14k Yellow Gold and known as the John Player Special model rare watch dates to 1967.
The dial signed Rolex Cosmograph stunning black matte dial with applied black square numerals, tritium luminous accents, tritium luminous hands, fifth of a second divisions on sunken champagne track, three sunken champagne engine-turned subsidiary dials.
The black bezel graduates to 200 units per hour tachymetre scale, then comes on a leather strap with Rolex signed buckle. The Rolex was watch only no box or guarantee papers wow Christie’s pull the big hitters!!
Their was plenty of other watches at the auction that was also a big hit. But Vintage Rolex’s seem to hit the lime light these days and going from strength to strength. The ultimate Paul Newman Daytona 6239 is coming up for sale later on this year Mr Newman’s own personal watch is tipped to smash all record sales for Paul Newman Daytona’s ever look forward to see that!
Copperstate 1000 Vintage Car Rally 2017 a video about vintage cars driving through breath taking scenery in Arizona presented by Hodinkee, vintage watches and vintage cars always go well together. It is a lot easier to store watches than cars mind you!! But vintage cars are a thing of beauty like the watches from same time period just that era was just fer nominal. It is Steve McQueen and Paul Newman cars and watches which are worth fortunes in today’s market.
Record Breaking Rolex’s at Phillips Auction Geneva yesterday and today with Aka “The Legend” Rolex Daytona 6263 with a lemon grené dial solid 18k gold stunning watch in every way only one of three known ever made. The watch sold at auction for a staggering $3,717,906, making it the second most expensive Rolex sold at auction today lot 237/237 just goes to show no stopping the Paul Newman phenomena. The vintage watch market booming more than ever. Picture courtesy of Hodinkee!
The Daytona set the record for the most expensive Daytona ever sold hence the nick name “The Legend” they did save the best for last apparantly. The most expensive Rolex ever sold was the day before 13 May. The Rolex ref 6062 “Bao Dai” just sold for $5,060,427 really gets a lump in throat when the hammer drops at them prices.
This model is only one if its kind with black diamond dial and belonged to the last emperor of Vietnam both watches are truly a credit to Rolex watch making in the 70,s as beautiful vintage pieces you can only dream of owing. Overall The Daytona would be the watch I would pick loved them from the first time I ever saw a bi metal Daytona in the 1990’s. Rolex always been one of my favorite brands as the years gone by I grew a love for vintage timepieces might be my age as getting older!!
Talking Watches With Ahmed Rahman In London, as the title says always like these little videos by Hodinkee, The watches are some of the best in today standards. Patek Philippe, Jlc, Rolex Daytona Paul Newman, Richard Mille a new comer to the watch game but very expensive pieces designed for F1 racing no surprise there expensive everything usually is to do with racing!!
As the title says Rolex Daytona Cosmograph 116500LN White Panda dial probably the watch of 2016 from Rolex very much loved and anticipated by every collector worldwide. The frenzy started after the basel show 2016 where Rolex showed the piece off since then the waiting list become impossible to get on everywhere in the world with the original RRp of £8250 pre price increase. To add to that never you will never see one in a Rolex Authorized dealer anywhere.
The watch is very similar to the older pre ceramic version which had stainless steel bezel with white dial and silver sub dials, the Rolex 500 (short for this model) has Cerachrom bezel in ceramic is the biggest change that is deeply loved and having a white dial with black subdials is a true Panda dial. Panda dial these days in any watch brand everyone wants!!!
The bezel I totally get after having the older model it is very easy the scratch, the ceramic bezel a lot tougher to mark when you are very OCD about your watches as most collectors are. The Rolex Cosmograph was loved by various stars Paul Newman was a great fan and true ambassador to the cosmograph brand dating back to the 1970’s which probably gave the watch its collector status today. Paul Newman Daytonas are fetching over £100k these days not bad for a £300 £400 watch in the 70’s. But to be honest vintage market gone through the roof last few years anything matt dial of gilt is the way forward.
To be honest I really loved the watch but at the cost of well over RRp I was very underwhelmed with the watch to be honest once I got one, this may be down to all the hype and build up to getting the watch and wanting one so bad!! But as waiting lists are totally non existent on this model for the next 15 years you after pay the premium to own one unfortunately as being Daytona fan had to try one. The pictures do speak volumes.
