A Watch Collector’s Journey

A Watch Collector’s Journey
Every watch collector remembers the moment it started.

For some, it’s a first proper watch bought after saving for months. For others, it’s a gift that sparked a fascination with mechanical movements, craftsmanship, and design. However it begins, collecting watches quickly becomes more than simply telling the time. It becomes a journey.
My journey started with a simple curiosity about how these tiny mechanical machines worked. From there it grew into a passion for learning about watchmaking, discovering different brands, and understanding what makes each timepiece special.
Over time, the collection evolved. Some watches stayed for years, others were enjoyed for a while before moving on to another collector. Each one brought something new: different movements, different stories, different eras of watchmaking.
That process is what inspired The Watch-Collector Leeds.
The idea was simple. Create a place where collectors and enthusiasts can find interesting watches, talk about horology, and enjoy the journey of collecting without pressure or pretence.
Every watch has a story, every collector has a journey. Here is a guide for building a collection for a beginner. Learn more about building a thoughtful collection here.

A Watch Collector’s Journey

Like many collectors, I never actually set out to become one.

My watch collecting journey started almost by accident. I simply wanted to buy my first proper watch, something that felt special and a step up from anything I had owned before.

The first watch I bought was a pre-owned Breitling Aerospace. I paid £800 for it at Owen & Robinson in Leeds city centre. At the time, that felt like a huge purchase for me. It was the first expensive watch I had ever owned and I absolutely loved it. It felt solid, beautifully made, and importantly, it felt like a real watch.
Looking back now, I realise that the watch unknowingly started everything.

A few years later, another opportunity came along. I managed to buy a pre-owned Rolex Submariner 14060 on eBay for £1,100. That moment was a real turning point in my journey as a watch enthusiast.

The Submariner completely blew me away. The build quality, the heritage, the simplicity of the design. It was on another level entirely. From that point on, I became fascinated with Rolex. What had started as a simple interest quickly grew into a genuine passion.
But the real obsession arrived when I discovered the Rolex Daytona 116520.

The Daytona is one of Rolex’s most iconic and desirable watches. The white dial version in particular, is a piece many collectors admire long before they ever own one. Clean, perfectly balanced and instantly recognisable, it’s the sort of watch that stops you in your tracks.

When that watch finally joined my collection, it became one of those pieces you simply admire every time you look at it. The white dial Daytona in the photo is exactly that watch. Everyone has to start their journey somewhere. Many collectors begin with TAG Heuer.
I started with Breitling… and somehow ended up deep in the world of Rolex. And like most collectors will tell you, once the journey begins, it rarely stops. ⌚

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is often misunderstood, yet it stands as one of Rolex’s most technically impressive models. Its unique features, like the Rolex Saros annual calendar and Ring Command bezel, set it apart from other luxury watches. In this guide, you’ll get clear insight into the Sky-Dweller timeline, key technical milestones, and what really drives its value today in the UK market. Thinking of selling a Rolex Sky-Dweller? The Watch-Collector Leeds is always buying. Learn more about the Rolex Sky-Dweller history.

Understanding the intricate past of the Rolex Sky-Dweller enriches our appreciation for its current status. Let’s begin by exploring its origins and development over the years.

Origins and Early Development

The Sky-Dweller made its debut in 2012, marking a significant milestone for Rolex. It was introduced as a traveler's watch, designed for those who frequently change time zones. This model stood out as the first new line from Rolex in two decades.

The launch was a bold move, featuring an entirely new complication: the Rolex Saros annual calendar. This innovation simplified the way months are tracked, needing adjustment only once a year. The design was both functional and elegant, appealing to those who value both style and utility.

Key Technical Milestones

The Sky-Dweller is packed with technical achievements. One of its standout features is the Ring Command bezel, a key to its functionality. This bezel allows the wearer to set the watch's functions with ease, providing a seamless user experience.

Under the hood, the watch is powered by the Rolex calibre 9001, one of the most complex movements made by Rolex. This calibre is a testament to the brand's commitment to precision and innovation. The movement ensures reliable performance, reinforcing the watch's value in the eyes of collectors.

Rolex Saros Annual Calendar

The Saros annual calendar is a pivotal feature of the Sky-Dweller. Inspired by the astronomical phenomena it’s named after, this calendar is a marvel of engineering. With only four extra gears, it distinguishes between months of 30 and 31 days.

The calendar’s design includes an innovative display with the current month highlighted in red. This subtle yet effective feature makes it easy to read at a glance, showing Rolex’s attention to detail. For more insights, you can explore the history of the Rolex Sky-Dweller.

The Sky-Dweller offers a range of dial and bezel options, each with its unique charm. Popular choices include the Sky-Dweller blue dial and the classic white and black dials. The blue dial and green dial, in particular, are sought after, often fetching higher prices due to their rarity. The green dial on a jubilee bracelet commands the most money in today's watch market.

Bracelet Types and Market Demand

Bracelet types are another critical factor in valuation. The Jubilee bracelet, Sky-Dweller and the classic Oyster bracelet both have their fan bases. The Jubilee is often associated with elegance, while the Oyster is seen as more robust.

Market demand fluctuates with style, but the Oysterflex Sky-Dweller has gained popularity recently. Its sporty look appeals to a younger audience, expanding the watch's market reach.

Factors Affecting Value

Several factors determine a Sky-Dweller’s value. Condition is paramount; a well-preserved watch with original parts will always command higher prices. Box and papers can add as much as 20% to the value, serving as proof of authenticity and history.

The model and reference number, like the Rolex 326934 or Rolex 336934, are also significant. Some references are more collectible than others, impacting their market value. To understand more, check out this Rolex Sky-Dweller history article. The Sky Dweller is a great achievement for Rolex, but is a very difficult watch to work with, and a great looking piece.

Selecting the right watches is crucial. Focus on iconic models from brands like Rolex. Rolex is probably one of the biggest brands for collectors. For instance, the Rolex Submariner is known for its durability and elegance, and is Rolex best selling watch to date, with Rrp prices reacting sky high prices.

Consider your personal style. Do you prefer a classic look or something more modern? Diversifying your collection can provide versatility. For example, a vintage Omega Speedmaster might pair well with a contemporary Tag Heuer Carrera. This mix can enhance your collection’s appeal and ensure you have timepieces suitable for various occasions. Omega has a great forum for buying and selling Omega watches, plus tons of information about models, problems etc...

Once you've built a collection, maintaining it is the next step. Proper care ensures your watches remain in prime condition and retain their value. Servicing is key.

Importance of Service History and Value

Service history significantly impacts a watch's value. Regular servicing by an accredited professional can keep your watch running smoothly and maintain its worth. A documented history can be a selling point, showing potential buyers the watch's well-maintained state.

Consider setting reminders for service intervals. For instance, a Rolex might need servicing every five years. By staying on top of this, you preserve the watch's longevity and value.

Preserving Box and Papers

The original box and papers are more than just packaging. In the old days, no one kept them as the papers/guarantee was just the warranty, so folk though, after a year, why keep them? They are part of the watch's story and authenticity. Keeping them in good condition can increase your watch's resale value by at least 30%. Collectors love a complete set of booklets, papers, hand tags, serial number tag etc... This is key for true collectors.

Timing your sale can impact the price you receive. If a particular model is trending or the market is buoyant, you might achieve a higher price. Consider selling during these peaks.

Also, assess your collection. If a piece no longer fits your taste or needs, it might be time to sell. This can free up funds for new acquisitions.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller has a story few watches can match, a true divers' watch, starting with its tough COMEX heritage and evolving through iconic references like the Double Red and Great White models. Knowing what drives its value today means understanding key details like original dials, helium escape valves, and unpolished cases. Whether you own a vintage Rolex 1665 or a modern Sea-Dweller 126600, this guide will give you clear insight into the history link

The Rolex Sea-Dweller stands as a symbol of watchmaking excellence. To understand its evolution, let's dive into its roots and explore how it transformed over the years.

From COMEX to Saturation Diving

The Sea-Dweller began with professionals in mind. Its journey started with COMEX—a deep-sea diving company, and was only made in limited numbers, 1000 to 2000 in total on all references. Rolex crafted this watch for those who faced immense underwater pressure. It featured the now-famous helium escape valve. This innovation allowed divers to spend longer periods underwater without damaging the watch. The partnership with COMEX set the stage for the Sea-Dweller to become a preferred choice for saturation diving. A detailed history can be found here.

The Sea-Dweller's journey saw the rise of iconic models like the vintage Double Red Sea-Dweller. This model featured two lines of red text on its dial, making it highly sought after by collectors and very rare. Following this, the Great White Sea-Dweller emerged, with all white text, catering to those who preferred a more subdued style. Both models have become legends in the watch community and date from 1970 to 1980. Theses was the birth of the Sea Dweller. They are celebrated for their design and functionality. If you want to learn more about these models, check out this guide.

Modern Sea-Dwellers continue the legacy with advancements that appeal to today's watch enthusiasts. The Rolex 16600 introduced the sapphire crystal, offering enhanced durability. The latter 16600 to the 126603 models brought updates in design and technology, a lot bigger in size at 43mm. They also brought back Sea Dweller in red writing, like the 1665 double Red. They retained the classic look while improving water resistance and movement precision. These changes make modern Sea-Dwellers a staple in any serious collection.
Originality is key in the world of watch collecting especally on vintage pieces. Having original parts, like the dial and hands, can significantly boost a watch's value. Collectors value these elements as they tell a story of authenticity and history. They also did a Rolex 116600 with a ceramic bezel, with a really short production from 2014 to 2017. Which is regarded as the best modern Rolex diver watch to date.

In 1945, the Rolex Datejust made its debut, forever changing the landscape of luxury watches. It was the first automatic wristwatch to feature a date function, which was a groundbreaking innovation at the time. This feature, housed in a waterproof Oyster case, set a new standard. As you wear a Datejust, you're not just wearing a watch; you're wearing a piece of history.

The Datejust was introduced to commemorate Rolex's 40th anniversary.
In the 1970s, the quickset date function was introduced.
The Rolex GMT-Master 16700 is a fascinating piece of horology, representing both the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in watchmaking.

Origins and Development

Introduced in 1988, the Rolex GMT-Master 16700 was designed with long-distance travelers in mind. This model retained the classic features that made its predecessors popular, yet offered new updates that appealed to a modern audience. The GMT-Master 16700 was built with the calibre 3175 movement, which is known for its reliability and precision.

Originally, the GMT-Master series was developed at the request of Pan Am Airways, aiming to provide pilots with a watch that could track multiple time zones at once. The 16700 continued this tradition, featuring a 24-hour hand that could easily differentiate between day and night hours for the wearer. This watch quickly became a favourite among those who appreciated both form and function.

The Rolex GMT-Master 16700 had a solid run until 1999, marking the end of the GMT-Master series as the GMT-Master II took the spotlight. Its enduring appeal lies in its robust design and practical features, making it a cherished piece for collectors. For a detailed history, you might find the Rolex GMT-Master history insightful.

Key Features and Innovations

What sets the 16700 apart are its key features that catered to both practical needs and aesthetic desires. The most notable was the quickset date feature, allowing users to adjust the date without needing to move the hour hand through 24 hours. Paired with the calibre 3175, this made the watch easy to operate and maintain.

The 16700 also featured a "Swiss-T <25" dial, indicating its use of tritium for luminescence. This material gave the watch a distinct glow, valued by night-time travelers. In later years, as tritium was phased out, Luminova replaced it, offering a different but equally functional glow. Collectors often seek out these versions for their unique characteristics.

These innovations helped the GMT-Master 16700 maintain its status as a desirable timepiece, blending vintage charm with modern practicality. The watch’s design ensured it remained a staple in the Rolex lineup until the advent of the GMT-Master II.

GMT‑Master vs GMT‑Master II 16710

You might wonder how the GMT-Master 16700 compares to its successor, the GMT-Master II 16710. While both models share a similar look, their functionalities differ. The GMT-Master II introduced an independently adjustable hour hand, allowing users to change local time without affecting the 24-hour hand.

This difference allows for more flexibility in tracking multiple time zones simultaneously. The 16710's movement also marked an upgrade, using the calibre 3185, which offered improved performance and precision. Most people think the 16700 is less functional, but it remains a favourite for those who appreciate straightforward, classic designs.

In terms of collection value, both models hold their own. The choice between them often comes down to personal preference: do you value the classic simplicity of the 16700 or the enhanced functionality of the 16710?
Understanding the various dial and bezel options of the GMT-Master 16700 can enhance your appreciation for this timepiece. These elements not only affect aesthetics but also play a role in the watch's value.

The Iconic Pepsi Bezel

The "Pepsi" bezel is perhaps the most iconic feature of the GMT-Master 16700. Its vibrant red and blue colours are instantly recognisable, making a bold statement on the wrist. This design was more than just eye-catching; it served a practical purpose by distinguishing between day and night hours on the 24-hour scale.

The bezel's aluminium insert provided durability, capable of withstanding the rigours of travel and daily wear. Over time, the colours may fade, but many collectors see this as adding character and uniqueness to each piece. The Pepsi bezel remains a sought-after feature for those who appreciate its blend of function and flair.

Exploring Dial Variants

The dial of the GMT-Master 16700 offers its own set of variations, each appealing to different tastes. Early models featured tritium dials, marked by "T<25" on the dial, known for their warm, vintage glow. As regulations changed, Rolex introduced Luminova dials, offering a different type of luminescence.

In 1998, the "Swiss Only" dials were introduced, followed by "Swiss Made" dials in 1999. These subtle differences can greatly affect the watch's appeal and value to collectors. Each dial variant tells a story of the watch's evolution, giving owners a personal connection to its history.

Aluminium and Black Bezel Options

Beyond the Pepsi, the GMT-Master 16700 was also available with a black bezel insert. This option provided a more understated look, appealing to those who preferred a subdued style. The black bezel still offered the same robust construction as its colourful counterpart.

Having different bezel options allowed owners to tailor their watch to their personal style, further cementing the GMT-Master 16700 as a versatile choice. Whether you prefer the vivid Pepsi or the sleek black, each variant maintains the quality and precision Rolex is known for.

Valuation and Collecting Tips

For those interested in collecting or selling the Rolex GMT-Master 16700, understanding what affects its value is crucial.

Factors Affecting Value

Several factors can influence the value of a GMT-Master 16700. The watch's condition is paramount: a well-preserved, unpolished case can significantly boost its worth. The presence of original parts, including the dial, bezel, and bracelet, also plays a critical role.

The watch's service history can either enhance or detract from its value. Regular maintenance by a certified Rolex service centre helps ensure its longevity and reliability. Additionally, a "full set" including the original box and papers can make a considerable difference, often commanding a premium.

Importance of Original Parts

Having original parts is more than just a collector's preference; it's a key factor in maintaining the watch's value. Replaced parts, especially non-OEM, can significantly reduce what a collector is willing to pay. Authenticity is crucial, and original parts provide the assurance that the watch remains true to its roots.

Collectors often seek out models with untouched parts, as these represent the watch's original state. This authenticity not only ensures higher resale value but also offers a deeper connection to the watch's history and craftsmanship.

Guide to Selling Your Rolex in Yorkshire

The heart of the Daytona 116520 is the Rolex 4130 movement. Introduced in 2000, it was a groundbreaking step for Rolex.
Rolex’s decision to develop an in-house chronograph was a game changer and much needed with the use of a third party "zenith." It showcased the brand's step to designing a fantastic, reliable movement for years to come.

The Daytona 116520 stands out with its superior build quality.
Several elements determine the value of a Rolex Daytona 116520. Rarity, condition, and provenance play significant roles. Watches with a complete set, including box and papers, often fetch higher prices.

Dial variations, like the APH dial, can also impact value. Such unique features are sought after by collectors. Regular maintenance and service history add to a watch's appeal. A well-documented history can make a significant difference in the valuation process. The Panna Dial is quite valuable due to the cream off white dial produced from 2000 to 2003, when Rolex changed to the in-house movement, as the dial had to be reconfigured, and there was a problem with paint on the dial. Here is a blog regarding Panna Dial that offers helpful insights.

The longer you hold a Daytona, its value always seems to be good, far more desirable than other sports models. A great testament to Rolex

The Calatrava's dial and case have seen several notable updates. Early models featured the iconic Clous de Paris bezel, a guilloché pattern that added a touch of sophistication. Over time, other finishes and materials were introduced, broadening its appeal. The simplicity of the dial remained constant, with subtle changes like the introduction of baton hour markers and improved lume. These elements ensured the watch was readable and stylish, making it a practical yet refined choice for any occasion. Each design tweak over the years has been carefully considered to enhance beauty and functionality. This attention to detail has cemented its status among collectors.
The heart of any watch is its movement, and the Calatrava is no exception. Its journey began with manual-wind calibres designed for precision. Over the years, Patek Philippe introduced automatic movements, ensuring the watch remained at the forefront of technology.
